The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) wishes to announce the admission of Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak as an Honorary Fellow of the RCOG, in recognition of her contribution to improving the wellbeing of women in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The Honorary Fellowship was awarded during the Opening Ceremony of the RCOG 8th International Scientific Meeting in Abu Dhabi on the 6th of December.
Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak is currently Chairwoman of the General Women's Union of UAE and Supreme Chairperson of the Family Development Foundation. She has been known for her leadership and dedicated commitment in promoting the welfare and wellbeing of women in the UAE. In 1973, she founded the Abu Dhabi Women's Society, which was the first women's society in the UAE. In 1975, she founded the United Arab Emirates Women's Federation. This organisation was developed to facilitate opportunities for women to realise their full potential through education and training.
Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak has been an active advocate on issues related to women's equality and rights. She has been a role model across the Arab World and has inspired many through her efforts to improve the wellbeing of children, orphans, the aged and the disabled. She was instrumental in providing free state education to girls and ensuring adult literacy in the UAE. Among her contributions to women's health, she helped to identify the need for specialist medical care and was responsible for the delivery of a woman's hospital locally.
H.E. Saif Bader Al Qubaisi, Chairman of SEHA, said "Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak has been instrumental in promoting the health of women and has served as a role model in the country's progress and development. One of our SEHA hospitals, Al Corniche Hospital, was made possible because of her efforts and advocacy. The decision of the RCOG to recognise the commitment and dedication H H Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak has shown towards the women of the United Arab Emirates and their families is very gratifying."

The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists 8th International Scientific Meeting is taking place in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates, from Monday 7 to Wednesday 9 December 2009.
